Värsked uudised! Selle aasta esimesed seemned on tärganud! Mõned päevad tagasi külvatud suureleheline basiilik on idulehis, samas karbis on mulla all peidus veel kibepiprad 'Jalapeno' ja 'Cayenne'.
News! News! News! This year's first seads germinated! It's basil, broadleaf.
Gardening is my hobby - I have never studied it at school and obviously never will. So all my garden know-how comes from books, journals and internet.
Years ago I was looking for gardening book first time. I remember that very well, because the reason for I desperately needed info was kind of silly. I wanted to sow some pumpkin seeds indoors in spring, but couldn't find any info which side of pumpkin seed should I insert down and which should left up :D I bought books, lend several more from library, searhed internet, asked neighbours and I never got the one and clear answer. So I just sowed the seeds anyway and got the answer, too - it was so simple, so logic, so obvious - how silly of me! My knowledge about gardening was just so zero on these times. Since then I have learned a lot from books and internet and of course - from my own experience as well.
Aastate jooksul on raamatuid juurde kogunenud - väärtuslikemaiks on osutunud inglise keelest tõlgitud RHS väljaanded: "Praktiline aiapidaja käsiraamat" ja "Praktiline aiarajaja käsiraamat". Eesti autoritelt lehitsen teistest sagedamini Mari ja Mati Laane "Põõsaraamatut".
Among other garden books there are some good RHS handbooks, translated in Estonian and few books from estonian authors in my bookcase. The last ones are valuable foremost its plant hardiness and disease information, because UK climate is a little bit warmer than in Estonia and I am not very big fan of frost tender plants.
Aga üle kõige ootan ma iga kuu alul kannatamatult ajakirja "The Gardener's World". Ajakirja professionaalseid fotosid on samuti mõnus vaadata.
My best source of gardening information is "The Gardener's World" magazine, which I have been ordering couple of years now. It is a pleasure to get regularly up to date information every month and there is always something new in each issue. This magazine covers different aspects of gardening, including veggie growing - so most of the magazine is interesting to me and photos are professional, too.
I also order the magazine 'Moi prekrasnoi sad' in Russian language, but I am not big fan of that. The pictures have been so intensively processed that look clearly untrue. Still, there is sometimes very good articles about plant species. There is also some planting plans in every issue, but these are always intended for very small gardens, which is minus in case my large garden.
There are many gardening handbooks which try to cover wide range of gardening subjects, but I always feel that design paragraphs are way too short in these "all-in-one" books. So... last week I had my lucky day - the delivery of garden design books from amazon.com arrived! Yeeee!!! Of course, there are luck far more than for one day and it's all about design! I am not plant collector and for me it's not the matter of life which particular plants I have in my garden - it is overall garden layout, composition, partnerships, what is attractive to me. About delivery... Ordered 5 books. Most of all I was looking forward to read Diarmuid Gavin and Terence Conran garden design book "Outdoors", but it was not that informative as I had expected. Yes, it was really BIG (in size A3, I think) photo album, but I certainly had expected too much of it.
Niisiis osutus parimaks valikuks hoopis RHS'i väljaanne Matthew Wilsoni sulest "New gardening. How to garden in changing climate."
The best book (in my opinion) I got was RHS publication Matthew Wilson's "New gardening. How to garden in changing climate." This book emphasises the garden design in harmony with nature not against it, sustainability, importance of trees etc. It covers topics about planting styles, suggestions for different conditions, practical advice for design... Among new ideas there was also information, what I already had intuitively applied in my garden, so it was nice to read also professional explanations for these solutions and admit that I am on the right way. I also found out some useful info about plant care. For example, I certainly want to try the "Chelsea chop" this summer - I had heard about it already earlier, but didn't know exactly when, how much and which plants are OK to cut by this method. Now I feel more confident to try it. The text in this book is so clear and easy to read, that I read the whole book (more than 200 pgs) in a day. The photos in this book are just gorgeous.
Teise koha mu edetabelis sai Meredith Kirtoni raamat "Plot. Designing your garden". Lisaks ajakujunduse põhialustele käsitleb see raamat üle paarikümne erineva aiastiili. Kuna jääb mulje, et teose autor elab Austraalias, siis on see sisult mõnevõrra erinev inglise autorite raamatuist.
My secong favorite book in this delivery is Meredith Kirton's "Plot. Designing your garden." Besides garden design fundamentals this book includes suggestions for more than 20 different type of styles (incl. exotic gardens: Oriental, Santa Fe, Mediterrean, Middle East, tropical; by color palette: Hot color gardens, Purple, Green, Black and White, Pastel and many more). The author of this book seems to live in Australia, so this book is slightly different from UK author's books.
